Cosmetic Dentistry General and Preventive Dentistry Root Canal Treatment and Endodontics

3 Factors That Affect Your Root Canal Treatments’ Longevity

The Success of a Root Canal Treatment (RCT) depends on many factors but the result is crucially dependent on the elimination of root canal infection present before starting the treatment, and the prevention of contamination during treatment.  A successful root canal procedure must be performed with great precision and effective sealing of the roots should be fulfilled.

The longevity of the root canal treatment varies on multiple factors.

Firstly the diagnosis of the root canal problem should be error-free and the root canal procedure should be carried out with much care. Having said that the root canal procedure is conducted on an infected tooth, and is only is fair to say that this tooth is weaker than the rest of the healthy teeth.

One has to understand that to perform the RCT procedure, the endodontic specialist has to drill a hole into the crown of the decayed, infected tooth to clean the pulp. After space is cleaned and shaped, filling the root canal is very crucial. Filling of the root canal is done by using a rubber compound called gutta-percha to protect the teeth from micro-organisms. A temporary filling or crown is used to close the access hole on the crown of the operated tooth. Normally these filling or crowns are made of silver amalgam or composite resins.

The second factor that contributes towards the longevity of the RCT is the care after the root canal sittings. The fitting crown/cap on top of the root canal treated tooth is a must. Many patients neglect the importance of having the root canalled tooth fitted with a cap since the pain has subsided. The RCT-filled tooth, without the crown, has a high risk of fracture, which can be avoided by the fitting of the Crown/cap.

Once the RCT is completed, the after-care is extremely important in determining the life-span of the treatment. Proper care of the affected tooth (in addition to the other teeth) includes brushing, flossing, the right diet, and regular visits to the dentist are very important. Avoiding bad habits like chewing your nails or opening plastic packages with your teeth will also help your crown last longer.

In short, the 3 major considerations to determine the endurance of your RCT starts with the diagnosis. Cautious care for the tooth undergoing the treatment is important and is the second consideration. Once the treatment is completed, the after-care of the RCT is imperative! With these three steps in mind, unquestionably a tooth or teeth with well-treated root canal fillings and restorations will last for many years, if not a lifetime.

Why is it important to rectify the crowding of teeth for good Dental Hygiene?

That’s a lucky tooth! Well, not exactly. You could have teeth crowding or malocclusion.

Read on to learn more about the crowding of teeth and why is it important to rectify this condition.

Crooked teeth, misaligned teeth, crowding, or gaps between teeth call for an orthodontic procedure. Orthodontics is a specialty under dentistry that addresses ill-positioned teeth. The ill-positioned teeth and jaws, leading to misaligned bite patterns in teeth, which is a common problem amongst many children, teenagers, and adults.

The imperfect positioning of the teeth when the jaws are closed is termed as ‘Malocclusion’. This condition does not only affect the shape of the face but also the appearance of teeth. It also impacts the ease of eating, speech, and oral hygiene. There are several reasons that one can have orthodontic issues, all such issues can be addressed and treated with the right procedures from an orthodontist.

Let’s look at what is crowding of teeth and why it is important for your dental hygiene to have your teeth fixed.

Teeth Crowding

Crowding is the insufficient space for all teeth to fit properly into the jaws. The teeth may be angled or displaced. As a consequence, people with this condition of malocclusion (misalignment) have crooked teeth that overlap each other.

Overcrowding can be mild, moderate, or extreme, depending on the size of the patient’s jaw and how many teeth they have:

  • Mild Crowding — Slight dental crowding occurs as one of the front tooth in the upper or lower jaw is partially twisted
  • Moderate Crowding — significant dental crowding is when two or three front teeth converge in the upper or lower jaw
  • Severe Crowding — Severe dental crowding is wherein most of the front teeth converge in the upper or lower jaw

If the tooth-to-jaw size is not in the right ratio, or when the teeth are wider and larger than the space available for their growth, crowding occurs.  Usually, crowding is caused by the early loss of milk teeth, the improper eruption of teeth, or a genetic mismatch between jaw and tooth size.

When a tooth is trapped under the gums and is blocked by other teeth, it is referred to as an ‘impacted tooth’. A lot of people believe this can cause dental crowding. The type of treatment depends on the age of the patient and whether the dental crowding is mild, moderate, or extreme. Popular teeth straightening options for crooked teeth include:

Dental braces are the most popular treatment options for overcrowding, particularly in children. People get braces for both aesthetic and practical purposes (not only to fix their smiles but also to reshape their jaws). There are a few different types of braces to choose from, including conventional metal braces and clear braces. A patient has to visit their orthodontist/dentist every four to eight weeks until the braces are removed. They are left on for twelve months to two years.

Clear teeth-aligners, such as Invisalign are another alternative to fixed braces. They are used for straightening not just crowded teeth, but other forms of misalignment as well. Fixed braces can be ugly and odd, causing low self-esteem amongst younger children/Adults. Clear aligners are a good alternative for the fixed braces. The entire treatment comprises clear aligners which must be replaced every 2-3 weeks. During this duration, the patient wears the aligners for about 22hrs a day and for roughly 25-30 weeks to correct even a mild misalignment.

Extreme dental crowding may require dentofacial orthopedics. Orthopedics focuses on guiding facial bone growth and aligning teeth properly in the process.

Crowding should be corrected because it can:

  • Make it much more difficult to properly clean all the surfaces of your teeth
  • Increase the chances of dental decay (because of inadequate cleaning)
  • Increase the chances of gum disease (because of inadequate cleaning)

In addition, straight teeth improve an individuals’ appearance and self-esteem, they also have oral health benefits. For example, straight teeth are easier to clean, brush, and floss between, leading to good oral hygiene. Thus, you are less likely to develop cavities and other oral infections.

The chances of developing tooth decay and gum disease are higher when an individual has moderate to severe teeth crowding. This is because teeth that overlap are more difficult to clean daily. Poor oral hygiene can also lead to general health complications over time, such as a weakened immune system and heart disease (rare). Correcting crowding can help avoid tooth decay and periodontal disease by enhancing the ability to remove plaque from the teeth.

What are Dentures? If you are considering them, are they Good for You?

Have you been suggested Dentures?! Then you must have a lot of questions.

How safe are they? Will they hurt? Can we talk and chew normally with them on? How soon can I get them and how cost-effective are they?  It’s very likely that these are some of the common questions you may have when you are considering getting dentures.

Dentures are a great way to get your smile back and it can boost a person’s confidence as psychological benefits are often what the patients are more concerned about, especially if you are suffering from significant tooth loss or teeth injuries due to an accident and damaged all of your teeth. Dentures are quite beneficial and they are the perfect solution for missing teeth. They are usually made with superior materials and processes which could almost make you forget you are even wearing them.

Denturists highly recommend dentures as they have a multitude of benefits for patients who suffer from broken or damaged teeth. They improve the mouth’s functionality, supports facial features, better oral health conditions, and increase your self-confidence.

Let’s start with ‘what are Dentures?’

Dentures, also known as false teeth, are removable prosthetic devices or frames for holding one or more artificial teeth. Basically, dentures are synthetic/artificial replacements for missing natural teeth. Dentures fill the gaps/spaces created by missing teeth, and also help individuals to eat, speak, and smile normally. These frames and teeth are colored/shaded to match the natural color of gum tissue and teeth. Dentures are made of hard plastic known as acrylic.

But, why do we need dentures? Missing teeth can affect speech, chewing efficiency, smile, and facial appearance. Digestion of food starts from the mouth, missing teeth decreases the chewing ability which in-turn influences digestion and food absorption, reducing the nutrition levels.  When there is a loss of teeth, facial muscles snags making you look older than your actual age and dentures help in improving your appearance. All these factors can greatly influence the quality of life.

Tooth loss can occur for different reasons. The most common reason for tooth loss is due to periodontal disease (a disease that attacks the gum and bone structures around the teeth), which is a serious infection in the gums/tissues that hold the teeth to the jaw bone. The cause for developing periodontal disease is poor oral hygiene which triggers bacterial growth in the mouth. Long term undiagnosed hormonal issues in women can cause loss of a tooth. The other reasons that one could opt for dentures is due to loss of tooth/teeth in an accident or due to facial or jaw injury.

Let’s look at some of the Types of Dentures:

  1. Traditional/Conventional Complete Dentures: Complete dentures replace the patient’s entire set of teeth which is commonly worn by elderly patients and they are customized according to the patient’s mouth. It restores the natural feel, shape of the teeth, and appearance of the face. With dentures, patients can grind, crush, and chew like how they used to eat normally before dentures.
  2. Removable Partial Dentures: This type of denture is suggested when the patient still has some of the natural teeth left. These are built into a metal framework and has a pink color base which is attached to the metal frame.
  3. Immediate Dentures: A set of dentures are usually placed on the same day after the teeth/tooth extraction. In the traditional type, after all the teeth have been extracted, they need to wait for around 3 months until the jaw bone is completely healed for the replacement. Immediate dentures are refitted or replaced after the complete healing.

Denture Alternatives:

  1. Fixed Partial Dentures or Implant-Supported Bridges: Unlike complete dentures, these dentures are non-removable. They restore one or more teeth that are/are missing in a row. The denturist can fit this type of dentures only if strong natural teeth are present on both sides of the missing teeth. It is way too stronger than a false removable tooth.
  2. Snap-in-Dentures/Implant or Tooth retained over Dentures: These are placed over the remaining natural teeth or implants. These are securely held in place using anchors onto existing teeth or dental implants. Within the tissue side of the dentures, the locator attachments will be embedded. The locator attachments snap onto the existing teeth/ implant, so they are convenient and removable. This kind of denture is widely preferred and is an effective choice because of its stability.

Depending upon the initial screening and understanding of the patients’ history and requirements, the right type of denture is suggested. After-care of dentures is equally important.

Few tips for maintaining & preserving the Dentures:

It’s important to clean the dentures just like natural teeth. Take them out of the mouth, run clean water, and gently brush to remove the food particles and plaque. Brush it all over with a soft denture or toothbrush using a mild soap or denture cleaner. Ensure not to use regular toothpaste/electric toothbrushes as it’s abrasive and can damage & wear away the dentures. Cleaning the dentures helps keep them from getting stained.

Also, rinse your mouth with mouthwash. Ensure to clean your gums thoroughly with sterile gauze to reduce the risk of bad breath and oral irritation.

Always remove the dentures before sleeping to avoid damaging them. Removing dentures will improve blood supply to supporting tissues and allows your gums some time to relax. Immerse the dentures fully in water and make sure it doesn’t dry out. If the dentures have metal attachments, the denture-soaking solution is recommended as the other solutions may have chlorine in them which can corrode the metal.

Single-Day Dentures – Transform Your Smile in 24Hrs!

Dentures, also known as false teeth, are the best way for many geriatric patients to restore their smiles and their desire to eat healthy and nutritious food. At Credence Dental, we offer custom-made dentures to help you enjoy a whole and complete smile, and instantly, you will feel a lot better about yourself.

With the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, many elderly patients have had to postpone their dental treatments, mainly due to the fear of contracting the virus. Living with consistent pain is not an option and will affect mental and physical health. At Credence Dental, we value our patients’ health and safety. For the ease and safety of patients who require dentures, we are offering the ‘One-Day Dentures’!

What exactly is the ‘One-Day Denture’ Treatment?

While most denture clinics in Bangalore, offer dentures that are fabricated with a series of multiple visits over several days to weeks, our ‘One-Day Denture’ allows you to experience the benefits of a fully functional denture almost immediately. They are also known as Same Day Dentures or ‘Denture in a Day’ procedure.

This procedure is unique, as the patient receives fully-functional dentures, which are customized and can be fitted within 24 hrs. This allows the patient to experience an instant and beautiful look as a result of the procedure. With these dentures, individuals will be able to smile, speak, and eat with confidence. These dentures are measured, manufactured, and molded to a patient’s oral cavity and are inserted as quickly as within a day.

Whether you need to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or all your teeth, or whether you are wearing unsightly partials, painful dentures, or old ill-fitting loose dentures you will get your smile back quickly and efficiently. Single-day dentures make it possible for you to have aesthetically-pleasing dentures in less than 24 hours.

Who can opt for One-Day Denture?

Normally, a seasoned denturist should be able to determine and precisely suggest if you are the right candidate for these dentures.

An ideal denture candidate includes the patient who:

  • Is the completely missing the majority of teeth
  • Is an existing denture wearer and is willing for a replacement?
  • If having multiple loose teeth or/and already missing a couple of teeth are suggested to opt for dentures.

Tooth loss can be caused due to various reasons, including periodontal disease, facial/jaw injury, tooth decay and extraction, poor oral health, and natural aging. Dentures in a day are the perfect solutions for addressing tooth loss problems effectively, quickly, and affordably.

Why choose One-Day Denture?

With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is indeed risky especially for elderly patients to have multiple visits to the dentist. If you have an aged person at home, who is suffering due to old ill-fitting, loose dentures, who cannot afford to risk (of contracting COVID-19) multiple visits to the dental clinic are potentially the right candidates for ‘one-day denture’ as it’s an optimal solution.

To reduce the risk of exposure to contracting the virus, the entire procedure from consultation to multiple-sittings and fitting of the dentures will be accomplished within 24 hrs. It’s a revolutionary development in the field of dentistry and it can be a life-altering experience for patients as to how the dentures are placed on the very same day.

Pediatric Dentistry

Pediatric Dentistry – A Healthy Smile begins with a Child

A happy and smiling child is worth more than all the money in the world!

All parents would definitely agree with the above statement. As parents, we know that the health of our little ones is extremely precarious, and utmost attention is required. It is a less known fact that tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease. It is imperative that parents inculcate good practices from childhood to ensure optimum dental hygiene, which would continue into teenage and spill over into adulthood.

Let’s start with what exactly is Pediatric Dentistry?

Pediatric Dentistry, also known as Pedodontics, is the branch of dentistry that is concerned with preventive and therapeutic oral health in children of all ages, from toddlers to teens.

Pediatric Dentists or Pedodontists are the specialty oral care providers who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of dental problems for infants and children through adolescence. They have the qualifications and experience to care for a child’s teeth, mouth, and gums throughout the various stages of childhood.

Taking your child for routine dental check-ups from a very early age will pave the way for sustained, healthy dental habits lifelong. It places a very strong emphasis on the fact that their oral health is a top priority and that is how a child will learn to prioritize their dental health and start caring about it.

What are baby teeth and why is it important to save Baby Teeth?

Baby teeth which are also known as deciduous teeth/milk teeth/primary teeth play a big role in a child’s dental health. Children get their first baby teeth during the first 6-8 months of life and they start losing their milk tooth when they turn 6 to 7 years, which eventually are replaced by secondary, permanent teeth.

Milk teeth should be maintained well despite the fact that it will fall off eventually to be replaced by a permanent set of teeth. If they fall out prematurely, the eruption and the development of the permanent teeth will be hindered as the baby teeth serve as natural place-holders for the baby’s secondary teeth.

Importance of Baby Teeth

Having known what is pediatric dentistry and baby teeth, let’s read on to know why it is essential to have a dental checkup for your child?

It’s vital to take your children for a regular dental checkup, beginning at a young age because neglecting those important baby teeth can cause trouble which could very well be for a lifetime.

Without proper dental care, there are possibilities that a child might face tooth problems such as tooth decay, early tooth loss, and common dental problems such as tongue thrusting, lip sucking, and also gum diseases. It is definitely alarming to know that as per extensive surveys and reports, nearly 25% of children between the ages of 2 to 5 years, already have teeth cavities.

Taking your child for routine dental check-ups from a very early age will pave the way for sustained, healthy dental habits lifelong. It places a very strong emphasis on the fact that their oral health is a top priority and that is how a child will learn to prioritize their dental health and start caring about it.

As parents, you always want to do what is best for your children and your children’s dental health is no exception.

We know how exhaustive it is for a parent to prepare your child for dental procedures. It is not going to be easy as children are not very cooperative always. In fact, dental exams can be an intimidating and painful experience for a child which they would like to avoid and this can be quite overwhelming for parents as well.

We at Credence Dental are well experienced to pamper and treat our young patients to have a pleasant experience and leave with a smile to eat all the chocolates and sweets they enjoy eating.

Braces, Aligners and Orthodontics

With Braces – Bright and Beautiful Smile is No Longer a Dream!

After all, getting straighter teeth with the help of teeth braces isn’t exactly an experience most of us would really like to possess. Dental braces create healthy and beautiful smiles but convincing yourself to opt for it isn’t always going to be an easy or hassle-free decision to make.

A couple of decades ago, when you were to consider orthodontic braces for teeth straightening, you almost certainly imagine a mouth filled with metal brackets and teeth wires. But now, there are a lot of other options out there, depending on your orthodontic problems, needs, and your budget.

Here are the few latest type of braces for straightening teeth that are currently trending in the market which enhances the alignment of teeth.

There are mainly 5 different kinds of braces which include:

  1. Traditional Metal Braces
  2. Ceramic Braces
  3. Lingual Braces
  4. Invisible Braces
  5. Self-ligating Braces

Each type of braces is associated with a set of pros and cons, which must be taken into consideration before starting with the orthodontic treatment.

1. Traditional Metal Braces:

Traditional braces involve brackets and wires, usually made out of stainless steel, which is attached or bonded to the teeth, to permit desired tooth movement and their positioning can be altered as needed. This kind of braces are usually the most effective, least expensive and it is one of the foremost common types of braces used to date.

Pros of traditional braces:

  • This type of braces are the most economic one compare to other types of braces for teeth
  • Traditional metal braces can be used to correct all kinds of teeth alignment issues
  • They are rigid and strong

Cons of traditional braces:

  • They are the most noticeable sort of braces
  • Metal braces and wires can break or become too long, poking the jaw, gums, or cheek tissues
  • Proper oral hygiene and care are necessary and there are food and drink restrictions as well.

2. Ceramic Braces:

Ceramic braces are the most common alternative to traditional braces but the difference lies in the material used as this type of braces are made of tooth-colored ceramic. They are attached/bonded to the teeth to permit desired tooth movement and regular adjustments are necessary. They work effectively as metal braces but they are typically more expensive.

Pros of ceramic braces:

  • Ceramic braces are less noticeable than traditional metal braces
  • They are more aesthetic compare to metal braces

Cons of ceramic braces:

  • They can easily get stained
  • Prone to Frequent breakages/de-bonding as compared to metal braces
  • Ceramic braces are more expensive than traditional metal braces

3. Lingual Braces:

Lingual braces have the same components as conventional braces but they are attached to the lingual or backside of the teeth instead of the front side and that’s why they are almost invisible. Lingual braces are the most uncomfortable type of braces compared to traditional braces as the tongue frequently comes in contact with the braces. Lingual braces can’t be used to treat all types of orthodontic problems, only a few simple corrections can be made.

Pros of lingual braces:

  • Lingual braces are almost invisible in appearance

Cons of lingual braces:

  • Lingual braces may give you a lisp and your speech may get affected as this kind of braces interfere with the movements of the tongue
  • Lingual braces are more expensive than both metal braces and ceramic braces

4. Invisible Braces/Aligners:

These are the most aesthetically pleasing, transparent, plastic form of teeth straighteners or teeth braces used to straighten teeth positions. Invisible braces do not involve brackets and wires but instead, they utilize a series of custom-made clear plastic aligners that are worn over the teeth for a minimum of 22-24 hours a day.

Pros of invisible braces:

  • They are more appealing in appearance and virtually invisible
  • They can correct dental issues such as teeth spacing, crowded teeth, overbites, underbites, and crossbites
  • They are removable.
  • It’s easy to maintain oral hygiene as it’s free from fixed braces and wires
  • It does not poke, scratch or irritate your gums

Cons of invisible braces:

  • The aligners/ trays can become stained or damaged
  • Typically, invisible aligners are more expensive than traditional braces

5. Self-Ligating Braces:

Self-ligating braces are very similar in appearance to traditional metal braces but they utilize inbuilt shutter/clip rather than elastic bands to hold the wire to the brace in place. As a result, there is less friction on the braces and it is usually easier for an individual to maintain a good oral hygiene by maintaining the braces and the teeth clean. Self-Ligating braces are available in both metal and ceramic material.

Self-ligating braces are equally effective as traditional metal braces and may increase control over the appliance, leading to more precise tooth alignment. However, they are often more expensive than conventional braces.

Pros of Self-ligating braces:

  • No elastic bands, so easy to maintain dental hygiene, fewer chances of tooth decay and gum problems
  • Can be used to correct all teeth alignment problems
  • Rigid and strong

Cons of Self-ligating braces:

  • This type of braces is quite visible and noticeable
  • It’s expensive compared to another kind of braces

A Healthy and younger-looking smile is just one of the positive results the braces provide.

To know more about what type of braces you may need, visit our dentist’s team at Credence Dental for a full evaluation and a dental checkup to treat all kinds of orthodontic conditions with the help of braces.

Pediatric Dentistry

Pediatric Dentistry – Helping Little Smiles grow into Big Smiles!

As Pediatric Dentists, we believe that ‘smiles can start as early as age one’ and the newborn babies have the most charming innocent smiles.

As we have read here, most babies start teething as early as 6-8 months of age and some after they turn 12 months old. That is exactly when our role as a pediatric dental doctor sets in!

Do you know the type of Treatments Pediatric Dentists Provide?

Pediatric dentists use their extensive expert knowledge to evaluate some of the comprehensive oral and dental health care conditions such as:

  1. Delayed teething issues in babies or toddlers: For an infant to be suitably weaned onto solids, it’s imperative that the child hits the developmental milestones at the right time, and teething in babies is one of the important milestones. If the teeth or jaw fails to form, this often manifests as late teething which may occur in many babies and needs to be addressed immediately. An untimely tooth eruption can hinder a child’s speech development so the issue needs to be reviewed and treated promptly.
  2. Tooth decay and dental caries: It is a less known fact that tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease. Baby teeth are more prone to decay compared to permanent teeth as the milk teeth have lesser mineral content than the permanent teeth. Baby teeth are going to fall out eventually but they matter a lot and when the cavities are left untreated, it may cause infections and dental abscesses around the root. This will affect and harm the eruption, growth, and development of the permanent teeth, which develops right below the milk tooth. Untreated cavities can also impair the chewing/masticatory abilities of the child which greatly influences the overall wellbeing and the development of the child.
  3. Misaligned teeth (Malocclusion): Malocclusion due to developmental issues can be addressed by the pedodontist.

Pedodontists also specialize in various other tasks like:

  • Child’s special oral care needs and dental health exams
  • Preventive dental care like teeth cleaning and fluoride applications, application of sealants and special counseling and recommendations on child’s nutrition and diet
  • Toothaches due to an abscess or broken, cracked tooth are considered dental emergencies
  • Breaking the child’s habit by discouraging thumb sucking, pacifier use, and finger sucking habits through different devices and methods as a part of oral habit counseling
  • Focusing on long term space changes and management if the primary tooth is lost in case there is a premature loss of teeth
  • Early assessments for correcting an improper bite (orthodontic treatment) and straightening teeth that are misaligned
  • Dental injuries like a displaced or fractured tooth that needs to be repaired or cared for
  • Diagnosis of oral conditions that are associated with some of the diseases like a congenital heart defect, asthma, diabetes, hay fever, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, etc.
  • Ulcers, mucoceles, pediatric periodontal diseases, and other gum disease management.

Our pediatric dentists encourage parents to start timely and preventive dental check-ups for their child. Following are some of the guidelines our pediatric dental specialist suggests for Infant Oral Health Care:

  • Brush and Floss teeth every day: To maintain a healthy set of teeth for life, brush your teeth at least twice a day and flossing it right after eating to eliminate harmful bacteria from the mouth is a good practice and the most effective way to remove plaque and debris from a child’s teeth.
  • Using toothpaste that contains fluoride: Dentists recommend that fluoride toothpaste should be a part of your child’s dental routine as fluoride makes the teeth strong and helps prevent cavities but just make sure that your child uses a very little amount of toothpaste because swallowing fluoride products increase the risk of fluorosis, a condition that causes changes in the appearance of tooth enamel in little kids.
  • Frequent and regular dental appointments: The dentists will provide strategies to decrease the risk of tooth decay by evaluating the general conditions of your child’s mouth.
  • Nutritional Assessment & Diet evaluation: Diet and nutrition play a key role in a child’s overall dental health as the food that they eat has a lasting effect on their teeth which could do some crucial damage. The risk of cavities and decay is greater when the child’s teeth are exposed to sugary food items more frequently.

At Credence Dental, as a pediatric doctor, our primary goal is to use our professional expertise, and retain a child’s healthy radiant picture-perfect smile and assure that our little patients feel safe and relaxed when undergoing dental treatments. We ensure that a child’s pediatric dental experience turns out to be a positive one and they would be happy to return.

Our dentists are dedicated to providing exceptional oral healthcare so that the little ones’ dental appointments will be non-traumatic and stress-free. Our Pedodontists make sure the child is comforted and ready for treatment by communicating in a kind and compassionate manner. Based upon a child’s dental health history, severity, special health care needs, and parental preferences, suggestions on dental treatments are provided by our dentists for the emotional, intellectual development, and the well-being of a child.

Braces, Aligners and Orthodontics

Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional Metal Braces –Straighten your teeth in style adding some colorful bands!

Braces are not just for kids, so if you aspire for well-aligned teeth and a perfectly beautiful and healthy smile, you can achieve that desired smile and straight teethno matter what your age is.

Arming yourself with the right information about orthodontic options available for getting the teeth braces and the correct treatment path to choose by educating yourself on the latest trends on dental braces treatment before you start prepping for the process can be beneficial in finding a treatment plan that fits your oral care needs, dental health, preferences, and your lifestyle.

Envisioning and expecting what you can achieve at each stage of your dental journey and teeth braces treatments will empower you in making an informed decision, right from the start.

Traditional Metal Braces:

What are Traditional metal braces / conventional braces?

Traditional metal braces are the sleeker, effective, comfortable, and most noticeable type of braces for straightening teeth. They are used to straighten crooked teeth or severely misaligned teeth.

What are traditional metal braces made of?

They are made from superior quality stainless steel which consists of small metal brackets that are bonded directly to an individual’s tooth’s surface with an adhesive, connected by super-thin archwires. The wires and brackets are connected by soft rubber bands called ligatures.

What are the advantages of traditional metal braces?

This design gently puts pressure on each individual tooth, gradually coaxing your teeth to move them to desired positions in very little time.

They are prescribed to align the extremely crowded toothjaw problems, and correct serious bite problems.

Conventional braces are the most economic orthodontic option and it’s least expensive compared to other types of braces for teeth.

If you wish for a personalized touch, a wide range of colorful options for brackets and elastics are available in this type of conventional braces for an aesthetic and more visually appealing experience.

What are the disadvantages of traditional metal braces?

The main disadvantage of traditional braces is that it has quite a lot of metal appearance in the mouth so if you are conscious about your smile and appearance, less noticeable orthodontics like clear aligners or invisible braces may be a better choice for you to consider.

Metal braces and wires can break and poke gums and cheek.

Proper oral care and dental hygiene are necessary as the food and drinks can get stuck in-between the metal brackets, wires, and elastics which may result in tooth decay/cavities and other dental issues.

They require frequent dental visits (compared to invisible braces) for periodic tightening by the orthodontists so that the steady pressure can gradually align your teeth and your jaws as well.

Who are conventional metal braces for?

Even though we have other orthodontic treatments available, conventional metal braces are still the most common and effective form of teeth straightening modality for all sorts of orthodontic problems.

How do they work?

Bonded or attached to each tooth and are connected by means of an archwire, to permit desired tooth movement and their positioning can be altered as needed.

How long do traditional metal braces take?

Typically, it takes about 12 to 24 months but as every case is different, it depends on a patient’s orthodontic requirements and their oral health conditions.

Is Teeth grinding and Jaw Clenching on Rise due to Coronavirus Stress?

What is Bruxism?

Do you grind or clench your teeth, suffer from jaw tension or facial pain?

Did you know you may be inadvertently damaging your teeth by grinding them?

Then this could be ‘Bruxism’, and we are sure most of you have never heard of this clinical term.

Bruxism, also known as teeth grinding or clenching is a condition in which you grind or clench your teeth or jaws excessively. Clenching your teeth and jaws puts tremendous pressure on the muscles, tissues, and structures around your jaw which can lead to temporomandibular joint problems (TMJ).

Bruxism occurs in both children and adults and transpires when the upper jaw rubs both sets of teeth together.

If you are suffering from this condition, and if you find yourself clenching your teeth unconsciously when you are awake, it is known as awake bruxism and if you clench or grind your teeth while you are sleeping, it is called sleep bruxism.

If you notice you grind your teeth occasionally, it usually does not cause any harm but when the teeth clenching and grinding occurs frequently on a regular basis, the teeth may encounter severe damage, and also there is a high possibility that other dental or oral health complications may arise.

Bruxism may be caused by stress, anxiety, an abnormal bite, crooked teeth, missing teeth, and other lifestyle factors. It’s important that we seek regular dental care to understand the signs and symptoms of bruxism so that it can be treated at an early stage.

The doctors have not been able to completely determine the causes of bruxism and hence the actual reason is unknown but they suspect it is due to the combination of physical, psychological, and genetic factors.

If your bruxism symptoms are mild, you may not need any treatment but if it’s frequent and severe, it can lead to jaw disorders, headaches, damaged teeth, and various other health problems.

Few of the common causes of bruxism are:

  • Stress, anxiety, tension, and depression: Stress or increased level of anxiety, anger, and frustration can lead to teeth grinding.
  • Age: Bruxism is quite common in young children and it usually goes away by adulthood.
  • Personality type: You may be at an increased risk of bruxism if you have an aggressive, competitive, or hyperactive personality.
  • Medications and other substances: At times, it can be an uncommon side effect of some psychiatric medications such as certain antidepressants.
  • Smoking and drinking: The risk of bruxism may also increase if you smoke tobacco, drink caffeinated beverages such as alcohol or have an addiction to recreational drugs.
  • Family history of bruxism: Sleep bruxism is usually a genetic condition. If you have this symptom, there are high chances that bruxism runs in your family and this disorder may exist among the other members of your family as well.
  • Other health disorders: Few medical disorders and mental health conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, dementia, gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD), epilepsy, night terrors, sleep-related disorders such as sleep apnea, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are also coupled with bruxism.

How to identify if you have bruxism?

Most people are completely unaware, whether they grind their teeth especially in cases where grinding often occurs while you are asleep. However, if you experience a dull, constant headache or sore jaw when you wake up, it is a telltale sign of bruxism. Bruxism during sleep is often a common occurrence and a bigger problem as it may go undetected for a longer period, sometimes years, as you may not even suspect you have it.

Why teeth grinding can be a harmful condition?

  • Chronic teeth grinding can result in a loose tooth, tooth fracture, or loss of teeth as it may wear teeth down to stumps.
  • It causes both short and long term headaches and other health disorders.
  • It can permanently damage one’s teeth as the enamel may get worn away.
  • Severe grindings may damage the teeth and it affects your jaws too. If left untreated, it can also cause or worsen temporomandibular joint disorder which can change the appearance of your face.

How to diagnose and care for bruxism?

  • Relieve stress as tension and anxiety can worsen the already existing condition. A warm bath or an exercise can help you relax as relaxing will ensure that the teeth grinding is reduced and decrease the risk of developing a chronic case of bruxism.
  • Practice good sleeping habits to relax your mind.
  • Avoid caffeine or any other stimulating substances in the evening.
  • Schedule regular dental visits and dental exams.

When to see a dentist or a dental doctor?

See a dentist if you:

  • Are concerned about your teeth or jaw and have any of the symptoms such as increased tooth pain, tooth sensitivity, locked jaw, or tight jaw muscles that won’t open or close completely.
  • When tooth wear leads to severe sensitivity or an inability to chew food properly.
  • Teeth grinding or clenching which seems loud enough to wake others up from sleep.
  • Have damaged, sensitive, or worn-down teeth.
  • Feel pain or soreness in the jaw, face, and ears.
  • Cannot open or close your jaw completely.
  • Have a dull headache starting in your temples.
  • Pain that feels more like an earache, though actually it is not related to your ears.

How can a dentist help with bruxism?

Diagnosis and treatment of Bruxism:

  • A dentist can help you to stop grinding your teeth by fitting you with a mouth guard to protect your teeth from grinding during sleep.
  • If you feel that stress is the major cause for you to grind your teeth, ask your dentist how to reduce or deal with your stress and anxiety issues. Starting an exercise routine or a program, attending stress counseling, seeing a physical therapist, or obtaining a prescription for muscle relaxants are some of the options available to cope up with stress.

Dental Implants – Upgrade Your Smile and Restore Your Natural Look

Have you lost your teeth and feel too self-conscious to smile, talk, or even eat in front of others? It’s time for Dental Implants then as they are the best option available for replacing missing teeth.

What are Dental Implants?

The dental implant procedure is the placement of prosthetic teeth and it is the strongest device available to support replacement teeth that looks and function just like natural teeth. This procedure is a form of prosthetic or artificial replacement dentistry as well as cosmetic dentistry.

Dental implants are placed in the jawbone and they provide a strong foundation for fixed or permanent replacement teeth and they bond with the natural bone.

With proper care and maintenance, the dental implant procedure can provide a smile that lasts a lifetime. The implant procedure is one of the safest and most successful in dental and cosmetic practices when placed by an experienced team of dental implant professionals.

Few of the common dental problems such as tooth decay or gum disease can make the implant treatment less effective so before an implantation treatment is considered, any underlying oral health issues must first be addressed.

Parts of dental implants:

The Fixture/implant, the abutment, and crown are the three main parts of dental implants.

  1. Fixture/Implants: The traditional implant consists of a titanium screw or post that is embedded or bonded within a patient’s jawbone. This screw, also known as titanium post functions as a tooth root. Implants are embedded into the jawbone due to the ability of the surface of the implant to fuse with the surrounding bone through a natural process known as osseointegration. Zygomatic implants are used especially in patients with severe bone loss when there is no enough bone available for dental implant surgery. These have much longer lengths than those used in conventional dental implants and are embedded in the Zygoma (cheekbone).
  1. Abutment: The abutment also known as the connector is placed on the top of the dental implant and it fastens the prosthetic teeth to the implant. It holds and supports the custom-made crowns which are made to fit your mouth. A small screw runs through the dental prosthesis and into the abutment to keep it tight and firm.
  2. Crown/Cap: It is an artificial replacement for the coronal part of the missing tooth/teeth. The crown is designed to be strong and appear as a natural tooth. The Crown is designed in a lab and customized according to the patient’s mouth. Prosthetic teeth that are designed for implants can be for a single tooth or a full set of teeth, also known as full-arch prosthesis.

Having a brief understanding of Dental Implants, let’s move to read as to

What are the types of dental implants?

  1. Conventional Dental Implants –

Single tooth, bridge, and full arch are the 3 different types of conventional dental implants

Single: In this type, an individual implant is placed to replace a single tooth that is lost such as a missing molar, lost anterior, or a front tooth. A healing period is required after the implant is placed and before the final crown is fitted.

Bridge: A bridge is usually supported by implants or healthy teeth from both ends and it fixes crowns over the area of missing teeth.

Full Arch: Full arch implants are placed for a patient with completely missing teeth who wish for a full set of upper or lower teeth, full-arch implants are recommended as full arch are the whole set of prosthetic teeth fixed onto 4 or more implants.

      2.  Zygomatic

Zygomatic dental implants are embedded into the cheekbone and in this method, it replaces the teeth in the upper jaw as this procedure is performed in case there is a severe bone loss in patients. The method of embedding and the length of the implant are quite different in zygomatic implants and conventional dental implants.

Ever wondered what dental implants can do for you?

  • Replaces missing teeth: Tooth loss can be caused due to several reasons such as tooth decay, periodontal or gum disease, medications, chemotherapy, accident, injury, etc. Replacing a lost tooth is imperative as it stimulates the growth of jaw bone, prevents bone loss, and helps to support facial and bone features. Implants restore your jawbone structure because they reduce the load on the rest of the oral structures in your mouth.
  • Improves the ability to chew and eat: Dental implants provide people with the strength and stability required to bite and chew through a variety of foods they love, without having to struggle to chew. Implants are suggested because dentures restore only up to 25% of bite strength whereas the implants often restore 80-100% of a patient’s original bite strength after the healing period.
  • Improved appearance and confident look: Implants are an effective cosmetic treatment for many patients to get strong and natural-looking teeth and regain the confidence to socialize without worrying about their looks or fear if the dentures will fall out while they talk or eat.

To help you determine if implants are right for you, a consultation with our dentist at Credence Dental is recommended as a dentist will thoroughly examine your oral conditions and evaluate bone density and quantity to accommodate implants.
